Summer is here, and that means your son or daughter has more time for fun outdoor activities like playing sports. This can mean a whole world of fun for them, but it also increases their risk of dental emergencies such as knocking out or breaking a tooth. Those sure aren’t fun! If you want to avoid an extra trip to your child’s dentist this summer, follow these 4 tips.

1. Protect Their Teeth During Sports

Sports injuries are one of the most common reasons people have to visit their emergency dentist. Prevent your child from breaking or knocking out their teeth by having them wear a mouthguard. You can get one from just about any drugstore, but it’s worth your while to get one custom-made for your child from the dentist. Custom mouthguards will fit more snugly and provide better protection against injuries. It might be more expensive, but it will save you emergency dental costs down the road.

2. Hydrate with Water Instead of Sports Drinks

Sports drinks may claim to be healthy, but they can wreak havoc on the teeth. They are chock full of sugar and acid that cause cavities. If your kid insists on consuming sports drinks, have them sip through a straw. Then the drink will bypass their teeth, providing them with the electrolytes they need without exposing their teeth to the sugar and acid in the drinks.

3. Teach Them Not to Use Teeth as Tools

Teeth are strong, but they are pretty much only meant for biting and chewing. They aren’t designed to withstand constantly opening packages and carrying bags. Instead, teach your little one how to safely use scissors to open things. Tell them NEVER to use their teeth as tools. They should stick to using them for eating.

4. Visit Your Pediatric Dentist Twice a Year

A common dental emergency is a toothache, which is frequently the result of a cavity. By taking your son or daughter to their dentist twice a year, they can get their teeth professionally cleaned to prevent cavities. In addition, they can get any cavities treated at an early stage before they can cause severe pain that warrants another trip to the dentist.

As a parent, you always want what’s best for your kid. By following these tips to avoid dental emergencies, you can achieve what’s best for their oral health.
